The one of the few good things that Louis van Gaal has done during his time at Manchester United is strengthening the midfield. However, it is fair to say Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick are both on the wrong side of 30.

The only three remaining central midfielder are Schneiderlin, Herrera and Fellaini and its highly likely that the latter will leave come the end of the season.

As a result, the Red Devils will need to move fast to secure a highly exciting young midfielder. Andre Gomes’ is one of the rising stars at Valencia and is a very promising player.

At 22, there is plenty of time for him to move to a new city, settle down and not be put under the pressure Anthony Martial has faced upon his arrival.

Gomes is one for the future, but based on the rate at which he’s progressing, he may well prove to be a gem for now.
