Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund)
Arsenal are extremely unlikely to pull off a move of this stature in a January window, with Dortmund likely to demand upwards of £40m for the Gabonese forward. Whether Wenger has a real interest in Aubameyang specifically remains unclear, but he is certainly the type of forward he has been trying to acquire for some time. Arsenal have been led down many a transfer cul-de-sac in search for that elusive ‘world class striker’, with moves for Gonzalo Higuaín, Luis Suarez and Karim Benzema all proving fruitless.
Olivier Giroud has done a sterling job for Arsenal; with 72 goals in 125 competitive starts for the club he has proved very good value for money at £13m (just a bit more than Ross McCormack). There is no doubt however, that Arsene Wenger would prefer a more mobile and subtle centre forward; George Weah, Nicolas Anelka, Thierry Henry and Robin Van Persie are evidence of that. Aubameyang certainly meets the criteria when it comes to mobility, and has become more clinical this season with 18 Bundesliga goals in 17 appearances. At 26 years old, he is in the midst of his peak. Arsenal’s best performances this season from an offensive point of view have come when Theo Walcott has played through the middle; a 5-2 win away at Leicester City and 3-0 home victory over Man United. It is no secret that having a pacy striker suits Mesut Özil, who has established himself this season as Arsenal’s attacking fulcrum. Whether or not a front three of Walcott-Aubameyang-Sanchez would have the right balance and blend, it would ensure an exciting watch.
