Gregory Van Der Wiel (PSG)
Not so long ago, Arsenal looked well stocked when it came to right backs with Hector Bellerin, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and Carl Jenkinson all on the books. However, Debuchy looks set to leave in order to get more game time before the European Championships in his native France. This may only be on loan, but it is rare for a player of his age to get back in the fold having been let go. Calum Chambers is being groomed for a central role, either at centre back or defensive midfield. Carl Jenkinson, affable character though he is, has been kept out of the West Ham team by James Tomkins for much of this season. There seems to be room for a signing to provide some competition for Hector Bellerin.
At 27, Gregory Van Der Wiel possesses a good measure of top level experience having played in a World Cup final with Holland and in plenty of Champions League knockout matches with PSG. He is also readily available having become frustrated at a lack of minutes under Laurent Blanc. Like many Dutch players of his generation, Van Der Wiel hasn’t quite lived up to the potential he showed as a youngster when a host of Europe’s top clubs were interested in him. The fact is primarily an offensive full back may also be off-putting to Wenger who generally likes a balance between conservative and adventurous full backs; and he has an outstanding one of those in Bellerin.
