Despite Arsene Wenger’s reputation for parsimony, Arsenal have bought no less than seven genuine first team players in the past 18 months.

With injuries to Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere, Wenger looks certain to add to the squad once again in the shape of a defensive midfielder.

With Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky all out of contract at the end of the season though, Arsenal supporters might have to wait until the summer for a big money purchase in this area. An addition elsewhere seems improbable, but you should never say never.

Arsenal’s transfer activity has become quite reactive in recent years; waiting patiently for the market to move and make an ‘Özil’ or a ‘Sanchez’ available. Such an occurrence is highly unlikely in this window, but not impossible.

Though Wenger has always insisted that January is a difficult time to do deals, he has been known to wet his beak if the right opportunities occur; the January window of 2006 saw the arrival of Emmanuel Adeybayor, Abou Diaby and Theo Walcott.

Andrey Arshavin, Nacho Monreal and Gabriel are other notable January buys.

In the following article, we examine five potential signings for The Gunners this winter – all of whom would assist Arsene Wenger’s men in their quest for the Premier League title.
