13 – Ander Herrera avenges FA Cup dismissal in fine fashion
One person with a point to prove heading into Sunday’s clash with Chelsea was Ander Herrera, the man who was prematurely sent off in the first-half of the FA Cup quarter-final tie last month.
It’s arguable that his dismissal cost United a spot at Wembley, but he put this behind him to produce a simply brilliant display of midfield dominance to inspire his side to victory at Old Trafford.
Armed with the task of keeping Eden Hazard quiet he went about it excellently, not allowing the Belgian any time on the ball and always sticking within five metres of him.
Herrera bossed the midfield throughout, making five clearances, four tackles and four timely interceptions – one of which led to the opener – as well as completing 42 passes to tick things over.
His attacking play was equally scintillating, however, and his pass to release Marcus Rashford early on was one of the passes of the season; his vision was perfect and the weight on the pass matched.
Luck was on his side for his deflected goal, but as they say you make your own luck at times and the Spaniard certainly did that in arguably the most impressive performance at Old Trafford this season.
