Borussia Monchengladbach vs Fiorentina: Match Preview, likely line-ups and score prediction

The Europa League is back for the start of it’s Round of 32 ties this Thursday, and this is one of the mouth-watering ties coming from Europe, as two-time winners of the old UEFA Cup Borussia Monchengladbach of the Bundesliga, take on Fiorentina of Serie A, whose only European title was the Old Cup Winners’ Cup back in 1961.

‘Gladbach dropped into the competition after finishing third in their Champion League group behind Barcelona and Manchester City, whilst Fiorentina progressed from the Europa League group stages after topping Group J ahead of Greek club PAOK Salonika, Azeri outfit Qarabag, and Czech side Slovan Liberec. The Italians won four, drew once and lost once on the way to progression.

Recent form

German club ‘Gladbach are enjoying an unbeaten run of five matches in all competitions in 2017, winning each of their last four and currently lying 10th in the Bundesliga table, and so will go into their home leg with Fiorentina in encouraging form. They did, however, fail to win any of their three home fixtures in the Champions League group phase on the way to finishing third and dropping into the Europa League.

Meanwhile, Fiorentina have been shaky on the road in recent months, with just two wins in their last six away games in all competitions, losing the other four. Their away form in Europe has faired slightly better, however, with two victories and a draw coming in their three away matches in the Europa League group phase. Their one loss on the way to topping the group was a 2-3 reverse at home to PAOK.

Predicted line-ups

‘Gladbach are expected to stick to the 4-4-2 formation implemented by Dieter Hecking that has seen them start 2017 unbeaten. With forward Raffael doubtful for the first-leg, Lars Stindl and Andre Hahn are in line to replace him, with the former the likelier to get the not to start alongside Thorgan Hazard (brother of Chelsea’s Eden), in attack. On-loan Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is set to start at the heart of the defence.

Paulo Sousa is expected to deploy his side in a defensive 3-4-2-1 formation, with Khouma Babacar likely to get the nod to start as the lone forward ahead of Nikola Kalinic, having been widely used throughout their Europa League games this season. January signing Riccardo Saponara is expected to be handed his European debut in attacking midfield alongside Federico Bernadeschi. On-loan Aston Villa man Carlos Sánchez is expected to start in the midfield four despite being one booking away from suspension.

Raffael remains a doubt for ‘Gladbach after having sat out their last two games, with Jonas Hofmann also rated doubtful for the clash with La Viola. Indeed, the Germans have had several injury problems to contend with coming into this one, with Kolo, Ibrahima Traore, Marvin Schulz and Mamadou Doucoure all on the treatment table. Mahmoud Dahoud is expected to start, but is one booking away from suspension and will miss the away leg at Stadio Artemio Franchi if he is carded here.

Fiorentina’s only expected absentee is Federico Chiesa, who sits out the first-leg trip to Germany after carrying over a suspension from the group stages. Meanwhile, Carlos Sánchez is one booking away from suspension and although expected to feature, a booking at Borussia Park would see him out of the return leg in Florence.

Our prediction

‘Gladbach’s recent upturn in form under Dieter Hecking is cause for encouragement, and they will be striving to pick up their first win at home in a European proper competition this season. With Fiorentina’s rocky away form in mind, there are always goals in their games, with over 2.5 goals going in during each of La Viola’s last five in the competition, the Italians netting at least two in all of those games.

Their most difficult away assignment in the group stages saw them pick up a point at PAOK, but we expected Fiorentina’s struggles to continue against an in-form side who should finally get off the mark at home in Europe this season. Our call is Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 Fiorentina.

Stevan Jovetic: Is he the suitable player to replace Carlos Tevez?

Nachiketh Ramesh looks at Stevan Jovetic’s most likely destination this summer. Will he complete a move to Manchester City?

Fiorentina have secured the services of the 28 year old German Mario Gomez. Tevez has settled down in Turin ( Juventus ). Higuain’s future is hanging between Arsenal and Real Madrid. Pellegrini wants Edin Dzeko to stay at Manchester City.

Stevan Jovetic, the striker from Montenegro striker who plays for Fiorentina, is looking for a move from Florence. He is currently valued around 26M Euros.

Chelsea and Manchester City look like the major contenders to sign this prolific player.

Manchester City sold Balotelli to Milan and Tevez to Juventus so now only have Aguero and Dzeko as their first choice strikers.

Jovetic would be a good addition at the Etihad. Manchester City are also negotiating a price for Alvaro Negredo of Sevilla , who played in Euro 2012 in the absence of injured David Villa.

Manchester City could sign both of them and according to a report, Pellegrini is ready to spend 42M Euros on Jovetic and Negredo.

Chelsea have El Nino and Ba as their first choice strikers but the board are not happy with their recent goal scoring form.

The London club have a good squad with a number of star individuals (Cech, Terry, Cole, Azpilicueta, Lampard, Eden Hazard, Mata, Schurrle and Oscar.)

But it is not enough for a team to just have a strong and creative mid field to score more goals and win games. In the EPL a team can only contend for the first spot if it has a in-form striker in its ranks.

Chelsea have already failed to sign Falcao and Mario Gomez and Edinson Cavani is set to join French champions PSG.

Mourinho has options in unsettled striker Manchester United, Wayne Rooney and also Liverpool’s  Luis Suarez. However he is also ready to offer around 25M for Jovetic.

Arsenal were in pole position to sign the striker at the start of the window, however their bid was rejected. If Higuain stays at Madrid, then Arsenal might increase their bid for Jovetic.

Jovetic usually plays as a second striker. He can also play along the left flank as a winger. He played a crucial part in Fiorentina’s successful season as they finished fourth in Serie A and secured a spot in the Europa League.

Mario Gomez to Fiorentina: “Super Mario” follows Miroslav Klose to Serie A

Bayern Munich have agreed for a fee of 20M Euros ( 25.7M $) from Fiorentina for the transfer of German striker, Mario Gomez. Nachiketh Ramesh evaluates his credentials.

Bayern Munich have agreed for a fee of 20M Euros ( 25.7M $) from Fiorentina for the transfer of German striker, Mario Gomez.

Gomez will now follow veteran Miraslove Klose to Italy. Klose plays for Lazio, who finished 7th in the Italian League and also won the Coppa Italia in the “Rome” derby.

“It was the desire of Mario Gomez to leave Bayern Munich for Florence. We have now complied with his wish,” Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club’s official website.

“He has made a major contribution to two German championships and two DFB Pokal victories. The highlight was of course the Champions League victory and winning the treble last season. I would like to thank him for his Bayern performances. On behalf of the club, I wish him luck and success in Florence!”

Fiorentina finished fourth in Serie A last season. To improve their performance and to find a suitable replacement for Steven Jovetic, the Voila have signed Gomez from Munich. The Italian club were on red alert when Gomez declared his intent to move to another club in May this year. Ever since then, they have been tracking him.

Fiorentina’s Jovetic has been linked with Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan. Its clear that any one of these clubs could sign Jovetic who has a price tag of 28M Euros.

Fiorentina have already secured the services of AC Milan’s defensive midfielder Ambrossini. The Voila have also signed goalkeeper Gustavo Munua, defender Marcos Alonso and midfielders Juan Cuadardo and Joaquin.

Mario Gomez was the first choice striker for the Bavarians in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons. But he was side lined and made only a few first team appearances due to the signing of the Croat Mario Madzukic. He has so far scored 75 goals in 115 appearances for Bayern at a rate of 0.65 goals per game.

Gomez is known for striking using both the feet. He has the ability to anticipate passes and crosses. He, Ribery and Robben formed a lethal combination for Bayern. Gomez is still remembered for his four goals against FC Basel in UCL2011-2012 Knock-out stage in which Bayern won 7-0. In the DFB Pokal 2012-2013 semifinal against Wolfburg, Gomez came on as a sub and scored a hat trick within the space of 6 minutes.

He is a superb player. Or else Bayern wouldn’t have signed him from Sttugart for a record fee around 35M Euros. Now he has a fresh opportunity in the form of Fiorentina. He will surely get the status of first team striker. All he has to do is continue is mesmerizing form to impress the people of Florence and the other Italians. Let’s wish Mario Gomez good luck !
