Filip Benkovic, who is on loan at Celtic from Leicester City, has given a major update on his future.
Speaking to Sportske Novosti – a Croatian media outlet – Benkovic revealed his desire to return to Leicester next season and fight for a first-team spot.
This will be a crushing blow for Celtic fans, who were hoping to extend his loan or launch an optimistic permanent bid for their defensive star.
But Benkovic is already showing signs that he will be ready for Premier League action, further bolstering Leicester’s impressive defence.
The Foxes already have some exciting young defenders and Benkovic could slot into a back four alongside centre-back Harry Maguire and left-back Ben Chilwell.
This would give Leicester a defence that is the envy of all the clubs outside of the top six.
Maguire, 25, is coming into his prime and could form a solid central defensive partnership with Benkovic.
At Celtic, the 21-year-old has established himself as a strong tackler and his 6ft 4in frame makes him tough to beat in the air.
The main concern with the Croatia under-21 starlet is his injury record, which is preventing him from playing more games at Celtic.
But if Benkovic can steer clear of injury and Leicester can keep the likes of Maguire and Chilwell, they will be tough to break down next season.
