Ferguson urges Morelos to stay at Rangers and shine in Champions League

Berry Ferguson has urged Alfredo Morelos to stay at Rangers this summer and fire Steven Gerrard’s side into the Champions League group stage – with the Gers set to have a chance of getting into the Champions League stage.

With Rangers set to win the Scottish Premiership title following Wednesday’s win over Livingston, they will be handed the chance to qualify for the group stages next season – with qualification fixtures starting in the summer.

They might have the opportunity to play alongside Europe’s best, rather than playing in what is a European B-league in the Europa League. Colombia international Morelos is likely to be crucial to Rangers doing that.

However, the striker – like other Rangers players – has been linked with a move away and those rumours could return in the summer after 26 goal involvements in 34 games, scoring 14 and creating 12. Ferguson has had his say.

“Morelos looks settled and highly motivated – I even saw a wee smile out of him the other night – I actually wonder if he’s already got one eye on making a mark on next season’s Champions League,” Ferguson told the Daily Record.

“Hearing that music blast out before kick-off sends a shiver down the spine. He’s about to have the chance to do it in a Rangers shirt next season, I’d love to see him doing that under the floodlights on the greatest stage of them all.”

While he has changed his game somewhat this season, dropping deeper and not getting as many goals – he remains just as crucial to Rangers. Under Gerrard, he has developed his football intelligence, and hold-up play.

Morelos will have ambition to play in one of Europe’s top-five leagues in his career. It will boost his chances of regular caps at national level, but it will also see him reach the level of ambition he wants in his career.

But why would you leave Rangers – who could be in the Champions League next season – to join a mid-table Premier League side? It is a no-brainer for Morelos, at least for one season.
