Rio Ferdinand has told his YouTube channel that Cody Gakpo‘s asking price has probably risen to up to £80 million following the Liverpool target’s performances in the group-stages of the World Cup with the Netherlands.

Gakpo appears to be attracting attention from many of Europe’s heavyweights. Of course, he went into the tournament having scored 13 goals and contributing 17 assists in 24 games for PSV Eindhoven.

Fabrizio Romano told Caught Offside that Liverpool have been scouting Gakpo, as well as fellow Eredivisie star Mohammed Kudus, this season.

And Ferdinand believes that his stock has risen considerably in the last couple of weeks.

Gakpo played a starring role in getting the Netherlands out of their group in Qatar. He scored in the wins over the Senegal and the hosts. And he also found the back of the net against Ecuador.

Manchester United have also been linked with Gakpo in recent months. And with that, Ferdinand has bemoaned the fact that he has been in such fine form before the club could bring him to Old Trafford.

“Man United’s next signing, who we probably could have had for £25, £30 million before the tournament who’s now just doubled to £60 million – with add-ons: £70 or £80 million,” he told his YouTube channel.

“The numbers that are going to be spoken about after this tournament, if he does nothing from this point on, he’s doubled, minimum, in value, in wages, and in the transfer fee.”

Liverpool may have conflicting feelings about forward’s form

Certainly, clubs such as Liverpool will have mixed feelings about Gakpo’s form. His asking price will have definitely risen by a significant amount.

But they will be pleased to see him prove himself on such a big stage. It will help the Reds understand if he will be able to take his form to the Premier League.

Obviously, there is a risk to sign players from the top-flight in the Netherlands. Some are not able to handle the step-up. And, if Ferdinand is correct, Gakpo would potentially become one of the most expensive signings in Liverpool’s history.

But the last deal the Reds struck for an Eredivisie forward seemed to turn out pretty well.
