Ferdinand and Evra laud Bukayo Saka after World Cup performances

Rio Ferdinand has told his YouTube channel that Bukayo Saka showed why he is a top level player every time he played for England during the World Cup, expressing his surprise that the Arsenal star missed out on the FIFA team of the tournament while Phil Foden made it in.

Saka was one of the Three Lions’ best players in Qatar as they got to the quarter-final. He scored three times for Gareth Southgate’s side, including a brilliant third against Senegal in the last 16. It was also Saka who won England’s first penalty in their agonising quarter-final loss to France.

There had been talk about whether Saka would start ahead of the tournament. But the Gunners star did all he could to show why he should be in the team for years to come.

“I’ve got to do a special mention to Bukayo Saka, he was really good. He went close to getting in my team. He scored three goals, every game he did something that made me think he’s top level,” he told his YouTube channel.

Interestingly, FIFA’s team of the tournament included both Foden and Harry Kane. And that prompted both Ferdinand and Patrice Evra to express their dismay that Saka had missed out to the Manchester City man.

“I don’t think that was right. If Foden gets in, Saka should have been in before Foden,” Ferdinand said.

Evra added: “It doesn’t even make sense, why Foden is in the team and no Saka?”

Arsenal fans may not mind Saka going under the radar a little bit more. Obviously, they know how special a talent he is. And they would not have been surprised to see him take the World Cup by storm.

But Foden is, understandably, often earmarked as the most naturally talented attacker in the England ranks.

Saka does not necessarily get all of the credit he deserves still. He has been outstanding ever since breaking into the first-team at the Emirates. And he continues to clear every hurdle put in front of him.
