Fenerbahce president says he wants a manager like Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, no contact has been made
Fenerbahce president Ali Koc has been quoted by Turkish newspaper Miliyet as saying that he wants a manager like Marcelo Bielsa this summer. However, he has stated that there has been no contact with the Leeds United gaffer – despite the Argentine being out of contract in June.
Bielsa, 65, has starred as manager of Leeds. Arriving in the summer of 2018, the former Bilbao boss has turned a 13th-placed Championship side into a ninth-placed Premier League team in just three seasons. He has become a fan favourite, hardly bringing in any players to improve the team.
When he took over, the likes of Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper, Gjanni Alioski, Kalvin Phillips, Stuart Dallas, Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison were all Leeds players. But they remain key members of the side. The growth of the club has to be attributed to Bielsa – that has seemingly attracted attention.
Fenerbahce are now looking for a new manager. Erol Bulut was replaced by Emre Belozoglu as interim manager, but now the SuperLig club want a replacement. Speaking about Bielsa, Koc stated they want a manager in his mould. However, there has been no contact with the Leeds United gaffer.
“We are being linked with a move for Bielsa. But we haven’t made any contact with him. But it’s true that we are looking for a manager of his calibre. We’ll see what happens. I hope we will be able to announce our new manager in three weeks,” Koc told Miliyet.
Bielsa would be better-off remaining at Leeds, than join Fenerbahce
It has been stated time and time again. Bielsa’s desire to sign a new 12-month Leeds contract every summer does not reflect on his potential future away from the club. He has stated he sees his future at Leeds, that he will not manager another English club – and he is planning for this summer.
Angus Kinnear confirmed as much in his programme notes for the last game of the season. So, Bielsa is not going anywhere this summer. Even if it is to Fenerbahce, who finished third in Turkey’s Super League last term.
