Aston Villa recalled goalkeeper Jed Steer from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic.
And he was immediately thrown into action in the New Year’s Day game against Queens Park Rangers.
With Orjan Nyland out injured and Lovre Kalinic not yet eligible to play, Aston Villa manager Dean Smith decided to place his faith in Steer, who was preferred to Mark Bunn and Andre Moreira.
Steer had little to do against QPR and was not at fault for either goal in the 2-2 draw.
But the 26-year-old did need to make a late save to ensure the scores remained level.

Many Aston Villa fans felt that Steer should have been playing this season instead of Nyland.
The Norway international has made several costly errors, prompting the Villans to dip into the transfer market and sign Kalinic.
But Steer will have his eyes on a full-time role in the Aston Villa first-team now after playing his third league game for the club.
Having joined the club from Norwich City in 2013, Steer has been frustrated in the past.
But Nyland’s injury may have earned him a chance to impress. This is what Aston Villa fans thought of his display.
