Chancel Mbemba has prepared for the task of facing Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos, The Daily Record reports.
FC Porto host Rangers on Thursday night in the Europa League group stage and Mbemba has been talking to the media ahead of the game. He has identified strike pair Defoe and Morelos as the two danger men ahead of the match.
Mbemba has played against Defoe before – when the pair clashed in the Tyne & Wear derby between Newcastle and Sunderland. But he will face a new challenge keeping free-scoring Colombian striker Morelos quiet.
Mbemba on Rangers
Mbemba said: “I know British football from my time at Newcastle and this won’t be an easy night for us against Rangers. Scottish football has improved in the last few years.
“We’ve watched Rangers and it’s clear that they’re a strong team. Morelos and Defoe are dangerous forwards with quality. But our defenders are prepared for this.”
Whoever Steven Gerrard decides to play up front, Porto will face a tough task. Experienced poacher Defoe and hot-headed maverick Morelos offer contrasting styles but both know where the net is.
Mbemba will need to be at his best to keep Rangers quiet in Portugal. Alongside experienced defender Pepe, it will be a mouth-watering clash with the Rangers front men.
