Newcastle United legend Faustino Asprilla has outlined his hopes and ambitions for the Magpies should they find themselves under new ownership, in conversation with The Sun.
The Magpies are in the final stages of a takeover bid, with the club now very close to being bought off Mike Ashley, as was reported by talkSPORT on Wednesday.
PCP Capital Partners, headed by Amanda Staveley, have brokered the £300million deal which is being backed by the Saudi Arabian royal family’s Public Investment Fund.

Ashley and PCP have entered into a binding agreement, with terms agreed last week and a deposit paid, and documentation has been sent to the Premier League.
Newcastle’s prospective new owners are expected to have major ambitions upon arriving at St. James’ Park and Asprilla is excited about what the future may hold for the Magpies.
“I want us to create a team like Manchester City, teams with money like Paris Saint-Germain,” the Colombian told The Sun.
“I hope we can buy the best players and compete at an international level and fight for the Premier League and European titles.
“With the Saudi money I hope we can create a team like the one we had in 1996-97 when we fought for the Premier League.
“Newcastle deserves something better (than before), like Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, players that were important. I want the new owners to understand the needs of the fans to compete.”
TBR View:
Newcastle fans have had to put up with many prior stories of protracted takeover talks over the years but the latest reports suggest that one is now closer than ever.
The Saudi group is reported to have assets of more than $320billion, so there is certainly plenty to get excited about.
Building a successful team isn’t going to be an overnight job but with the right funds and the right setup from top to bottom, there is certainly scope for progress to the upper echelons of English and European football.
