Aston Villa ran out 4-0 winners over Southampton at Villa Park on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard’s charges secured consecutive Premier League wins for the first time since November in the rout.

Villa loanee Philippe Coutinho completely ran the show against Saints, contributing to three of their goals.

Ollie Watkins gave the hosts the perfect start with the opening goal after just nine minutes.

Coutinho and Danny Ings exchanged passes in midfield, before the latter slipped the 26-year-old through.

Watkins then got the better of Jack Stephens and fired into the far corner of the net for his second in two games.

Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison loved what he saw from the England international.

“It’s a fantastic finish,” he said (5/3/22, 15:10). “He turned Stephens like he wasn’t there.”

Villa then made it two on the stroke of half-time through Douglas Luiz.

Calum Chambers, on the edge of the box, split the Saints defence with a cleverly judged lofted ball for Coutinho.

The Brazilian then found his compatriot five yards out for an easy finish.

A further two goals in two minutes at the start of the second half then ended the game as a contest.

Coutinho got on the scoresheet in the 52nd minute with the help of a slight deflection through Fraser Forster’s legs.

Then, Matty Cash picked out Ings, who made it four with a well-struck volley against his former club.

“Coutinho has been the best player on the pitch by a country mile,” added Morrison. “He is a ridiculous player.”

But while it may have been the Coutinho show, plenty of Villa players shone on the day.

The result sees the Villans up to 11th in the Premier League table, just outside the top half on goal difference.
