'Fantastic' Rangers-linked striker ends season with 33 goals, owner doubts club can hang on to him
Reported Glasgow Rangers target Jonson Clarke-Harris has ended the 2020-21 season with 33 goals to his name, which is sure to spark interest from Ibrox and elsewhere.
Back in March, Peterborough director Barry Fry said Rangers have been regular visitors to their ground this season, and Clarke-Harris has been on the radar of Steven Gerrard’s scouts.
The Bristol Post also claimed at the time that English sides Bournemouth, West Brom and Sheffield United were interested in the 26-year-old.
Clarke-Harris has helped Posh to promotion from English League One thanks to 31 goals and two assists, the striker also netting twice in the EFL Trophy.
His heroics this term have led to Whoscored naming him in their Team of the Season.
“Rounding off the Peterborough trio is striker Clarke-Harris,” they wrote on Sky Sports.
“The 26-year-old made a superb impact upon his return to the Weston Homes Stadium, filling the void left by Ivan Toney following his move to Brentford.
“Clarke-Harris claimed the Golden Boot having hit the back of the net 31 times from 132 shots, the latter the third-best return.”
And Peterborough co-owner Darragh MacAnthony admits it’ll be hard to hang on to the prolific striker.
“No,” MacAnthony recently told Sky Sports – as quoted by the Hull Daily Mail – when asked if he was confident of keeping his leading scorer.
“Peterborough United can never pay players £25,000-30,000 a week, there will be seven or eight clubs already offering Jonson Clarke-Harris, Dembele, that kind of money. We are that club, we have to build.
“We’re not going to be selling a lot of our assets, but you always have one player that so many clubs are after, they’re going to tap them up which is normal, par for the course and it’s difficult to compete with that.
“He’s been fantastic, the best player in League One, the best goalscorer in England and if we can keep him, brilliant, because he’ll be worth double by January in the Championship.”
Admittedly, Rangers are well stocked in terms of attacking players, especially when you factor in Fashion Sakala’s imminent arrival.
However, when a player breaks the 30-goal barrier in one season, then surely he’s worth looking at.
Clarke-Harris has been in top form and he’s heading into the peak years of his career, so if Gerrard looks to move any front line players on this summer, the Peterborough man wouldn’t be a bad shout.
