'Fantastic quality': Antonio Conte backs Harry Kane, despite Tottenham blip
Tottenham manager, Antonio Conte, has backed Harry Kane and believes the striker has the ‘fantastic quality’ needed to turn around his poor run of form.
Kane has just a single Premier League goal to his name this season. That came at Newcastle, and despite a hat-trick in Europe, the England skipper has looked a long way off his very best this term.
This weekend sees Spurs take on Norwich City at home. On paper, it looks the ideal game for Kane to get going, with the Canaries struggling near the bottom of the table. And Conte, speaking ahead of the clash with Dean Smith’s side, believes he will find it hard to not keep picking Kane for now.
“If I answer in an honest way, to start a game without Harry now is a bit difficult for me,” Conte told Football.London.
“I always like to be honest with my players, and if I wasn’t satisfied with Harry’s performances, for sure I would tell him. But I repeat: I’m very satisfied with his performances – he is playing well and doing fantastic work for the team.
“A player like Harry can always solve the game because he has fantastic quality, he is a complete player, a real top player, and I’m honestly not worried about him.”
Kane scored 33 times in all competitions last season. However, after admitting he might look to leave in the summer, things haven’t quite got going this term, with some Spurs fans frustrated by the summer saga.
TBR’s View: Kane always comes good, but Tottenham need him
At the moment, it feels like Spurs are scrapping for wins a bit under Conte. There is no free-flowing football as yet, and with Kane not firing, it’s hard work getting the wins.
But while confidence in Kane remains – and we all know how good he is – he does need to start scoring goals soon for Tottenham. As things stand, there is too much pressure on others to deliver. And in honesty, a lot of these Spurs players have relied on Kane for too long.
Hopefully for Conte, Norwich is a good chance for Kane. If he fires a blank again, though, then the doubts could creep in even more.
