Tottenham stalwart, Eric Dier, believes Joe Rodon will have no problem stepping into the void left by Toby Alderweireld if needed.
Alderweireld will miss a period of the season through injury. That leaves new signing Rodon and Davinson Sanchez, as the viable choices to replace the Belgian alongside Dier.
Rodon, formerly of Swansea, was signed late in the day during the last window. The Welshman making the move to north London after impressing for the Championship outfit.
And Dier, despite admitting he has yet to get too close to the Spurs newbie, believes Rodon will be just fine based on what he’s seen.
“It’s difficult as we haven’t really spent a lot of time together since he arrived. From what I can see, he’s very humble, very hard-working. From what I can see he has a fantastic mentality to want to work, to improve,” Dier told FootballLondon.
“From what I’ve seen [of him] around the training ground, all of those things have been fantastic, and I know the Welsh boys Ben and Gareth speak very highly of him. So excited for him to be able to help the team.”
Rodon is a regular in the Wales set up under Ryan Giggs and will hope to use that experience to bed straight into the Spurs XI.
Dier, meanwhile, has been key all season. The England man emerged from the win over Man City with huge credit as he helped stem the flow of Guardiola’s men throughout.
Rodon will be fine but Alderweireld is a big miss – TBR View
It’s good news that Rodon might get his chance earlier than expected but there’s no denying the loss of Alderweireld could be a big one.
The Belgian has been a colossul presence for Mourinho’s charges this term. His injury is a huge blow, nobody will deny it.
However, Rodon will be ready. He’s been signed because he is good enough and with Dier in such good form, he should be able to bed in nicely to proceedings if Mourinho selects him.
