Glasgow Rangers duo Jamie Barjonas and Lewis Mayo have been tipped for success by Peter Lovenkrands, who was academy coach at Ibrox.

Barjonas, a 21-year-old midfielder, has come through the ranks at Rangers and has made nine competitive appearances for the Light Blues to date.

Mayo, a 20-year-old defender, is yet to feature competitively for the Gers first team but like his teammate, made an impression in Lyon as Steven Gerrard’s side won the pre-season Veolia Trophy.

Lovenkrands, who worked with the Rangers academy and reserve sides since 2017 before leaving earlier this month, named Barjonas and Mayo as two of the players who stood out for him.

“Jamie has fantastic abilities, his passing is second to none,” he told the Daily Record. “He has also added hard work into his game. He is physically ready to step up so he has got a big chance.

“It’s important he puts himself in front of the manager and does the best he can. It sounds as if he has done that in Lyon and scoring the goal will only help his confidence.

“I’m a big fan of Lewis too. He is a fantastic player who can play at centre half or step up and play the holding role in midfield. He did that for us.

“He has passing ability with both feet and is so driven. He will do whatever it takes to get to where he wants to go and I really hope he gets his breakthrough.”

Barjonas and Mayo both spent time on loan at Partick Thistle before the season was curtailed, and they’d have picked up valuable experience sharing a dressing room with experienced players.

Rangers have done well in the transfer market so far, snapping up Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey and Ianis Hagi.

And with promising academy talents like Barjonas and Mayo waiting in the wings, it could prove an exciting season for the Ibrox side.
