Fans react as Leicester playmaker Maddison is left out of England’s Nations League squad

James Maddison is not in the England squad for next month’s Nations League semi-finals but he will likely be in the Under-21’s European Championship.

England announced their squad for the semi-finals of the Nations League, in which they will take on the Netherlands on 6 June in Portugal.

Gareth Southgate’s men have made it to two semi-finals in two years, and have an exciting opportunity to top of a season in which English teams monopolise the two major European finals with an international trophy.

The England squad usually generates debate, even in an era in which Southgate’s summer success has increased trust in what he’s trying to do and some insulation from the wildest responses.

But Leicester playmaker James Maddison’s absence seemed to catch the attention of supporters in the aftermath on Twitter.

But the Nations League isn’t the only tournament taking place this summer, the Young Lions are also playing in the Under 21 European Championship and Maddison is likely to be called upon there.

That’s the most reasonable explanation for him not being in Southgate’s squad but these supporters appear to have missed the memo and took to Twitter to express their fury…
