There has been plenty of talk in recent months that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips could be in line for an England call-up.
Previous reports have also hinted at this being a possibility. Phillips is certainly on Southgate’s radar. As reported by the Daily Mail earlier this month, the England boss has watched him in action this season. It isn’t the first time either. In fact, as far back as October 2018, it was suggested by TEAMtalk that Phillips could be on the England watchlist.
Now, The Telegraph has reported (as relayed by Leeds Live) that Phillips is in line for a call-up to Southgate’s next England squad. The Three Lions take on Italy and Denmark next month in pre-Euro 2020 friendlies.

It is easy to see why England might be looking at Phillips. He has been in fine form for Leeds for the past 18 months and Southgate is not blessed with brilliant options in a specialist holding midfield role.
Whilst attacking midfield is an area England are blessed, the likes of Eric Dier and Declan Rice have had difficult seasons. Other options, like Jordan Henderson and Harry Winks, are better suited in more attacking roles.
Indeed, the idea of Phillips getting into the England team has caused quite the stir on Twitter. On the whole, football fans all seem to agree that the Leeds star is a future international. Most can also see that he would potentially solve a weakness in the current set-up. However, Phillips’ lack of Premier League experience is certainly working against him in the England fan popularity contest.
