Leeds United crashed out of the Premier League Cup in the semi-final last night as Newcastle United’s U23 side recorded a 3-0 win.
Second-half goals from Kelland Watts, Cal Roberts and Elias Sorensen sealed the victory for Newcastle in front of a big crowd at Guiseley.
Leeds fielded a strong U23 side with several first-team players featuring for the youngsters in this clash.
Kalvin Phillips, Izzy Brown, Jack Clarke, Gaetano Berardi and Bailey Peacock-Farrell were among the players included for the semi-final.
But Leeds failed to progress to the final as Newcastle cruised through. And this was just further frustration for Leeds fans.
The club’s first-team have stuttered over the Easter weekend with back-to-back losses severely denting their automatic promotion hopes.
Leeds fans have become used to the “annual bottle”, as one fan put it, but were frustrated that the U23 team have also fallen just short.
The Whites’ hopes of promotion are not yet over but Sheffield United are in pole position to claim the second automatic promotion spot behind Norwich City.
And after Leeds U23 lost in the Premier League cup, here are some tweets from riled fans.
U23s falling apart now look 🤣😂

I didn’t think the score was an accurate reflection of what happened on the pitch, but still it was hard to watch. Hope they have the strength they need to pick themselves up for the playoffs now.
Anyway, what a week for us – one to forget, really 😞💔

Could really do with some positive news right now after a shocking weekend. We need to beat villa and Ipswich to take momentum into the play offs

great to see it’s not just the first team suffering from the annual bottle

A total lack of composure, in front of goal, appears to be running throughout the club, at this important time of the season.

It seems failure has now permeated throughout the club.
