Facundo Torres confirms Arsenal had held talks with Orlando City

Facundo Torres has told 90min that Arsenal did hold talks with Orlando City over a potential move for him ahead of the World Cup, and hinted that he is open to considering his future.

Torres enjoyed a stunning year in Major League Soccer last year, scoring nine goals and contributing eight assists. In all competitions, he found the back of the net 13 times, and provided 10 assists.

His form did not go unnoticed in the Premier League. Reports from Goal in November claimed that Edu was set to meet with his representatives, with Torres keen to make the switch to the Emirates.

Obviously, it has been some time since those reports emerged. But Torres has now explained that Arsenal did indeed make their move before the 22-year-old went to Qatar with Uruguay.

“Orlando City confirmed to me that there was contact with Arsenal, but then I left for the World Cup and I didn’t want to hear about a potential transfer at that point.

“So the conversation stayed there but now that I am back with the team, we will see where the conversation goes,” he told 90min.

Forward must now be an option for the Gunners

It will be interesting to see whether the Gunners look to step up their pursuit of Torres in the coming days. Of course, the winger most heavily linked with Arsenal since those reports emerged was Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Mudryk has since joined Chelsea. So it will be intriguing to see how Arsenal react. Reports from Sport Italia over the weekend that they have already made contact over a potential deal for Raphinha.

Torres is unlikely to cost a similar amount to many of their other targets. And that will come into Arsenal’s thinking as they remain the pace-setters in the Premier League.

The Gunners are unlikely to panic buy when you consider how successful they have been in the market in the last few years. But they will surely not shut themselves off to potential bargains.

Torres has been labelled an ‘amazing‘ player. And he has shone in MLS over the last 12 months. So perhaps it may be one deal to keep an eye on before the deadline.
