Reported Leeds United target Sergio Aguero has made it into Garth Crooks’ latest Premier League Team of the Week on BBC Sport following a display in which he “made his point” to his manager.
According to 90min, Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites are one of the clubs interested in making a move for the legendary Argentina international at the end of the season.
Aguero will be a free agent at the end of the season, Manchester City confirming that his contract will not be renewed as both parties look to the future.
The 32-year-old, who signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011, has scored a club record 258 goals in 386 appearances for the Citizens.
Admittedly, Aguero has struggled this season amid injury and illness, and Pep Guardiola opted to leave him on the bench against Paris Saint-Germain last week.
The world-class striker was then recalled to the starting XI against Crystal Palace at the weekend and he responded with a goal en route to a 2-0 win.
“Pep Guardiola has gone and done it now,” wrote Crooks. “He’s made Sergio Aguero angry.
“The Argentine striker had a face like thunder as he was forced to sit on the bench and watch his team beat Paris St-Germain on Wednesday.
“Aguero was included in the team against Crystal Palace on Saturday and the Eagles paid the price.
“There is nothing worse than a top-class striker who has been left out of a top-class fixture.
“It’s where they belong and Guardiola knew he was playing with fire but got the desired effect.
“Not only was Aguero’s finish against Palace emphatic but he also made his point by announcing his frustrations on the pitch and now presents Guardiola with a selection problem.”
Even though Aguero turns 33 in June, he’s still a player of the highest calibre who has rightly cemented his place in Man City’s history – indeed, in Premier League history.
Having Marcelo Bielsa at the helm could potentially be a big draw for Aguero, who’d get the chance to play for his compatriot, one of the most esteemed coaches in world football.
And the fact Aguero was so gutted about missing out against PSG shows just how much fire he still has in his belly and how much he wants to impress – the perfect attitude for a Bielsa team.
