Fabrizio Romano takes to Twitter with fresh update on Bruno Guimaraes to Newcastle transfer

Newcastle United are edging ever closer to the signing of Bruno Guimaraes.

The Magpies have had to wait a while to land a third January arrival.

Newcastle got Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood over the line, but a lull followed.

What On Earth Is Going On At Málaga?

The Magpies worked hard on several targets, but they’re no longer pursuing some of those.

Now, Guimaraes looks set to be the Magpies’ third signing of the month.

Sky Sports reported earlier on Friday that Newcastle have agreed a package with Lyon to sign the midfielder.

The Magpies will pay an initial £33.3million plus £6.5m in add-ons to land the Brazilian.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said on Friday they are moving closer to making their third signing of the window.

However, he didn’t reveal who the player was.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided a further update on the state of play, as of 2:50pm on Friday.

The transfer guru said Newcastle chief scout Steve Nickson had touched down in Brazil for the final details of the deal.

And Guimaraes will be there to undergo his medical and sign the Magpies contract, added Romano.

“Playing the best football of his career”

Guimaraes has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Lyon this season, registering six assists.

He has also won three caps for the Brazil national team.

Sky Sports reporter Anton Toloui has given a further insight into Guimaraes’ quality and credentials.

“Bruno Guimaraes is a deep-lying midfielder, technically gifted, exceptional passer, and has brilliant ball retention,” he said.

“You’ll find very few players better at keeping the ball and passing the ball forward.

“He’s also a really hard worker, which is an element of his game that is massively underappreciated.

“For example, at Lyon this season, he’s covered more ground per game than any other player in that squad, so he really does put the work in as well.

“He’s playing the best football of his career at Lyon and is another player who has improved season upon season.”
