Newcastle United aren’t having the best of summers, it must be said.
Indeed, the Magpies are having a bit of a nightmare transfer window.
So far, only one senior signing has been made in the shape of Anthony Elanga, while Alexander Isak could be set to leave in the coming days.
Newcastle have looked at signing some big-name players, Bryan Mbeumo was a target at one point, while Newcastle wanted Joao Pedro too.
However, Eddie Howe’s side continue to miss out on key targets, and according to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on Men in Blazers, players are scared of signing for Newcastle for one key reason.

Why players are scared to sign for Newcastle
According to Romano, players are scared to sign for Newcastle because the Magpies don’t have a great track record of selling players.
A number of young stars seemingly want to use St James’ Park as a stepping stone, but, so far since the Saudi takeover, not a single player has been on that trajectory.
“I think there is a crucial point here. We always see Newcastle signing many players, bringing top players to the club, but it’s difficult to see Newcastle selling players,” Romano said.
“And sometimes some players who are younger and maybe want to develop in a different way, maybe they are scared to go to Newcastle and not having the opportunity to leave the club in maybe two or three years.
“So I think Alexander Isak can be also the opportunity for Newcastle to show that, yes, sometimes you also have to sell your players. You can’t always to keep all of them.
“So I think this is one of the points. Sometimes players are scared to go there because maybe they have to stay there for five years. And some of them in modern football want to leave after two or three years is part of the game.”
Newcastle don’t need to be a stepping stone club
Newcastle United are apparently struggling to attract players due to the fact they don’t act as a stepping stone club.
That is frustrating, but the reality is that the Magpies don’t necessarily need to follow that model to be successful.
Newcastle have a clear example to follow here, Manchester City were going through a similar process 15 years ago when they became the richest club in world football.
City became one of the best teams in the country, and they did so without acting as a stepping stone.
The likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany didn’t sign for City with their next moves in mind, they joined knowing they could win trophies at the Etihad.
Newcastle don’t need to become a stepping stone club, they just need to sell their project more effectively and showcase their ambition.
