Liverpool fans knew they had seen the last of midfielder Thiago Alcantara but news of his retirement has come as a bit of a shock today.

Thiago is to step away from playing football after an injury hit last few seasons robbed him of more time on the pitch for the Reds.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich man will retire as a serial winner, having won two Champions Leagues, seven Bundesliga’s, and four La Liga’s, among others.

Of course, some Liverpool fans might argue they never quite saw the player that Barca and Bayern did but on the whole, Thiago is well liked and respected at Anfield.

And speaking about what could be next for Thiago, Fabrizio Romano has shared an update.

What Thiago Alcantara could do next after leaving Liverpool and deciding to retire

Speaking over on his YouTube channel about a number of matter, Romano turned to Thiago and explained that the hope is that the Spaniard will remain in the game in some capacity.

“Thiago Alcantara has decided to retire from professional football. The decision has been made and will be official soon but I’m told everything has been decided together with his family.

“Thiago will remain in football. For now, he will take some time to relax, think about the next step. Start to plan for the next chapter and he will stay in the football world but not as a player.”

Whether or not one of those former clubs mentioned here will offer Thiago a chance to work with them, remains to be seen.

Liverpool, of course, have their own new coaching team in place with Arne Slot’s arrival so the idea of Thiago staying at Anfield in some capacity seems slim.

Nevertheless, Thiago will no doubt be welcome somewhere and after a glittering career, he deserves to do well when and if he decides to opt back into the game.
