A surprising transfer rumour claiming that Arsenal want to sign Liverpool star Darwin Nunez has emerged in the final week of the transfer window.

Arsenal and Liverpool both remain active as we get closer to deadline day, and both clubs are still in the market for reinforcements.

The Gunners could do with a new forward before the window closes. On the other hand, Liverpool are about to sign Federico Chiesa, which leaves them with a plethora of options up top.

That has led to rumours that Arsenal could sign Nunez on deadline day. Fabrizio Romano has delivered his verdict on that on Playback.

Fabrizio Romano dismisses claim that Arsenal want to sign Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez

Liverpool signed Nunez from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for a club-record fee.

The Uruguayan had a sensational final season in Portugal, and many people expected him to have a similar impact under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

However, Nunez has come under immense criticism over the last two seasons for the amount of chances he has missed for Liverpool up front.

That has led to claims that Nunez could leave Anfield, and Arsenal were named as the club interested in making a shock move to sign him.

Romano heard about these rumours and made a few calls to his sources to see what was actually happening. The journalist has now confirmed that there’s nothing in those rumours.

This comes after TBR Football exclusively revealed on Wednesday that Arsenal will not be signing Nunez or any other striker in this window.

Romano said: “I have absolutely no idea where this is coming from. I had many questions on my X account, my Instagram account, and everywhere about Darwin Nunez, so I think it’s worth saying something about this.

“I was calling some of my sources to understand about Darwin. First of all, I saw some rumours about Arsenal – nothing!

“There is absolutely nothing between Arsenal, Liverpool, Darwin and the agents of Darwin. Nothing!”

What should Arsenal do now?

When you think about it, Nunez to Arsenal makes sense.

Yes, the Uruguayan misses way too many chances, but he creates a lot of chaos in and around the box and that makes him a great option for Mikel Arteta, who has proven that he can improve players.

However, with Nunez set to stay at Liverpool now, Arsenal should prioritise signing a new winger in the final two days of the window.

They need someone on the right flank to provide cover for Bukayo Saka, who will be forced to play almost every game if the Gunners don’t sign a backup.

To add to that, Arsenal will need a new goalkeeper as well now that Aaron Ramsdale is on his way to Southampton.
