Liverpool’s summer transfer market is yet to spark into life as the Reds await their first signing of the window.
Arne Slot has now almost seen Liverpool through their first pre-season under the Dutchman who has had weeks to get to know his squad.
And there have been no new faces yet through the doors at Anfield for Slot to bed into his new club.
Liverpool’s summer has been a slow one with the Reds the only side in the Premier League who are still waiting on their first signing.
However, that could soon change with The Athletic reporting Liverpool to be in talks with a defensive midfielder this summer.
The identity of the player has not yet been disclosed but Fabrizio Romano has now shed some light on the current situation on Merseyside.

Liverpool in talks over a defensive midfielder from outside England
Having landed and now settled in on Merseyside, Slot has prioritised the defensive midfield position as one which Liverpool really need to improve.
Although the Reds have not yet acted in the market, it is clear that the Dutchman does have his ideas as to how he would like to develop the side he inherited.
The issue is Liverpool are now less than two weeks away from their new campaign starting.
Although there’s still around three weeks until the window shuts, any players arriving now will have missed out on the large majority of pre-season under Slot.
According to Fabrizio Romano, it is not just in midfield where Liverpool are looking to improve their squad.
“Liverpool have always been active for a new midfielder. And also something else, I don’t think it’s just a new midfielder,” he said.
“A new midfielder is a priority for Liverpool, they will do something. But also in other positions, so I think at least one more apart from the midfielder.”
Liverpool waiting late to make their first summer signing
One thing which can be said about Slot is the new Liverpool boss has seemingly wanted to assess the players which he has inherited to start the summer.
This may be a strategy which backfires as it has not provided any new signings an opportunity to travel on Liverpool’s pre-season tour.
But the main issue he has picked out is at number six with the Reds now looking to address that problem.
With the reported player said to be coming from outside of England, it will be interesting to see how quickly he could come into the side if he is to be signed.
