Chelsea loaned Ian Maatsen out to Borussia Dortmund last week.
The Blues decided that the Dutchman was best off developing away from Stamford Bridge for the next six months, and by the sounds of things, their plan is coming together nicely.
Indeed, not only is Maatsen likely to play more minutes over in Germany, it also sounds as though he’s getting his head down on the training ground too.
According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on Kick, Maatsen is already having a great impact in Dortmund training, claiming that the German giants are very happy with what they’ve seen from the Chelsea loanee so far.

Maatsen impressing already
Romano shared what he’s heard about the youngster.
“Jadon Sancho and also Ian Maatsen, Ian Maatsen is having a great impact also in training I’m hearing that they are very happy. Also for Ian Maatsen it’s important to clarify that he signed a new deal at Chelsea, until 2027 before he went to Borussia Dortmund and that deal includes a release clause for £35m,” Romano said.
£35m could be a bargain
That £35m release clause was only recently inserted by Chelsea, but it already looks as though it could ultimately end up being a bargain.
Maatsen’s Dortmund spell already sounds as though it may be a success, and in this kind of market, a 21-year-old left-back who is shining at one of Europe’s biggest clubs is usually worth a lot more than £35m.
Of course, we’re getting way ahead of ourselves here based on a report from training, but it does have to be said that in this crazy transfer market we’re currently seeing, £35m for a player as young and as talented as Maatsen could quickly be seen as a snip.
Don’t be shocked if that release clause is met this summer be that by Borussia Dortmund or someone else.
