Federico Chiesa’s future at Liverpool has been up in the air all summer.
The Italy international joined the Reds in 2024, and many viewed him as a very shrewd signing because he cost just around £10 million.
However, Chiesa had a very difficult debut season at Anfield because of injuries. He didn’t even play 500 minutes of football in all competitions and failed to score a single goal in the Premier League last term.
That is why the attacker has been heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool, but things have changed now, says Fabrizio Romano.
Federico Chiesa’s agent tells Liverpool that his client wants to stay
Almost every Liverpool fan expected Federico Chiesa to leave this summer.
The Italian is loved by the supporters at Anfield, but his injury troubles make it difficult for the Reds to rely on him for the entire season.
However, on the opening day of the new Premier League campaign, Chiesa made the difference against Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth by scoring the winner late in the game.
Now, Romano has revealed that Chiesa has decided to stay at Liverpool, despite considering a move away from the club earlier in the window.
The journalist said in a video on his YouTube channel: “What happened with Chiesa? As I always told you, Federico was never in a bad relationship with Liverpool, with Arne Slot, with his teammates, with the fans. Chiesa loves Liverpool. He’s very happy about the relationship he has with everyone at the club and with the fans who love him, absolutely love him.
“But Federico Chiesa, around June and July, had this feeling that he had to leave Liverpool if he wanted to go back into the Italian national team, try to reach the World Cup and more. So Chiesa was like, ‘I don’t want to leave, but I have to leave because this is the only opportunity’.
“Then, Luis Diaz leaves. Darwin Nunez leaves. No more winger joining, with Liverpool focusing on Alexander Isak – a striker, not a winger. And so, Chiesa started working very hard, trying to find the focus again. Despite not even being in the squad for the pre-season tour, in the first game of the season in the Premier League, he scores a crucial goal for Liverpool.
“So now, I can confirm to you that Federico Chiesa wants to stay at Liverpool. His agent also informed Liverpool that the desire of the player is to stay, is not to negotiate with Italian clubs anymore, but is to stay at Liverpool, compete and fight for his place.”
What Liverpool think about Federico Chiesa
Chiesa received a lot of love from Liverpool fans after his goal against Bournemouth.
The 27-year-old has had a hard time since joining the Reds, so it was great to see him get on the score sheet for the first time ever in the Premier League.
Chiesa is said to have decided to stay at Liverpool now, and that news will be welcomed by the Anfield hierarchy.
TBR Football exclusively revealed in May that Liverpool believed that Chiesa could still make an impact and were not pushing him out.
Slot always believed in him, and he will be happy if the former Juventus man stays at Liverpool beyond the end of the summer window.
Liverpool have two tough games coming up against Newcastle United and Arsenal before the window shuts. It will be interesting to see how Chiesa will fare in those fixtures.
