Tottenham Hotspur have done well in the January transfer window so far, bringing in two first-team signings already.
Spurs have bolstered their attacking ranks by bringing in Timo Werner and also have more strength in depth in defence with the arrival of Radu Dragusin.
Ahead of the January transfer window, The Athletic reported that Tottenham’s desire for a new midfielder was arguably higher than their interest in a new forward.
‘Spurs will probably look to bring in a No 8 but, ideally, they want someone who could also play as a defensive midfielder or in an advanced role,’ they wrote.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update in terms of what Tottenham plan to do on the midfielder front.
The transfer insider, writing on GiveMeSport, believes that Spurs will look for alternatives to Conor Gallagher, who may be tricky to sign this month.

Tottenham will sit, wait and aim for ‘good formula’ to sign new midfielder
Romano reckons Tottenham will now sit and watch as the “domino effect” takes place before looking at who could be available in the middle of the park come the latter stages of the window.
In addition, the Italian doesn’t think that Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips or Wolves ace Joao Gomes will be pursued by Ange Postecoglou in the coming weeks.
“I think they can look at alternatives to Gallagher, but I’m unsure if it will be one of them [Gomes or Phillips],” wrote Romano.
“Maybe a young player in that position could be a solution for Tottenham. But they’re not desperate for that, so I think it’s not imminent.
“They will take some time; they needed a defender and a striker, and now they will wait a bit for the market for the domino effect on midfielders around Europe to see if there will be some opportunity, probably with a good formula and not spending a crazy amount of money on the midfielder.
“I think this could be the strategy at Tottenham rather than going big on a super important midfielder like Gallagher.”
Spurs are currently missing Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr due to the Africa Cup of Nations, with the tournament running until 11 February.
Oliver Skipp, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg started against Manchester United and all three did fairly well in the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Yago Santiago was on the bench.
It looks as though Tottenham seem happy to make do in midfield, with academy stars on the bench, until Bissouma and Sarr get back. In addition, there’s apparently no rush for Hojbjerg to leave either.
