Fabrizio Romano has told Aston Villa fans on Twitter just how much power Steven Gerrard will have behind the scenes – when it comes to transfers.
Villa have moved quickly to bring in Gerrard – after sacking Dean Smith on Sunday following last Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton on the south coast.
The 41-year-old gaffer leaves Rangers to join Villa on a three-and-a-half-year contract until June 2025. An exciting move for Gerrard, and Villa.
He joins Villa, a side with a sporting director in place in the form of Johan Lange – having worked alongside Ross Wilson in a similar position at Ibrox.
With Villa sitting in the bottom five in the Premier League, Gerrard may feel that a couple of additions could be needed in the January window.
Italian journalist Romano has explained just what kind of power Gerrard will have at Villa, when it comes to making signings in the market.
Romano on Gerrard: New Villa boss will have demanded transfer say
His transfer nous at Rangers was excellent. While he did spend the best part of £50million during his time at Ibrox – it has taken Rangers to the top.
Ryan Kent at £7million was his most expensive, but the return of Kent in the last two games is proof that he remains the club’s best players.
Connor Goldson was bought for around £3.5million, easily worth it – given his consistency. Borna Barisic is easily worth more than the £2million paid.
He brought Rangers veterans Allan McGregor and Steven Davis back, kept hold of Alfredo Morelos and bought Joe Aribo for nothing.
His transfer nous should be seen as a tool that can take Villa forward – and it is good that Gerrard will have his say in the window.
