Liverpool transfer news: Romano claims Reds tried to sign Schjelderup

Liverpool have been linked with Andreas Schjelderup in recent months.

Back in September, CMW claimed the Reds were among the clubs eyeing the Norwegian midfield talent.

More recently, TV2 in Norway claimed that Liverpool had made proposals to the 18-year-old’s representatives.

However, Liverpool have now missed out on the signing of Schjelderup, who has gone to Benfica instead.

Fabrizio Romano has now reported that the Reds did try their luck for the prodigy.

The transfer insider, writing on his Twitter account, said Liverpool held “concrete talks” over a potential June move.

Indeed, Schjelderup was tempted by the Reds’ approach, added Romano.

However, the youngster felt a January move to Benfica was the “best step” for him at this moment in time.

Probably for the best

A year ago, Schjelderup told Goal.com that Liverpool were one of the clubs he had a trial at in 2020.

He also admitted he’s a boyhood Reds fan, so the signs were there suggesting the two could’ve linked up in the near future.

While it’s a shame to hear Liverpool have missed out on Schjelderup’s signature this time round, that’s not to say the Reds can’t try again in future.

Benfica have proven to be a hotbed of talent in recent years. They sign young prospects and turn them into stars before selling at a huge profit.

With that in mind, Schjelderup will likely get regular first-team football amid title challenges and Champions League runs.

This is by far the best thing for his development. Maybe in couple of years, he’ll feel ready for a new challenge – and maybe Liverpool could move then?

Schjelderup is a ‘very special‘ talent and there’s no doubt he’s got a big future ahead of him.
