Tottenham Hotspur’s long-lasting chase of Argentina international Cristian Romero took a step towards the finish line on Monday evening. That is because Fabrizio Romano claims Atalanta are about to accept an offer from Tottenham. The Italian journalist says Spurs are “one step away”.
Fabio Paratici and Tottenham are desperate to sign Romero and no wonder. The 23-year-old has had a brilliant 12 months, helping Atalanta finish second in Serie A. He won the league’s best defender award in 2020-21. Then, this summer, he helped Argentina win the Copa America.
It is about to get even better. Still technically a Juventus player, Romero will join Atalanta permanently – before Atalanta accept a £42.75million offer from Tottenham. Atalanta are also close to signing a replacement, in a loan-to-buy deal for Juventus ace Merih Demiral.
Brilliant Tottenham business to get Romero, amid Romano claims
He is exactly what Tottenham need. With Toby Alderweireld past his peak and now at Al-Duhail – Spurs were in need of a defender in Alderweireld’s mould, but younger. Romero is that. Strong, aggressive, good in the air, tactically adept and technically excellent, Romero is the perfect centre-back.
Now, it remains to be seen if Tottenham will bring in another central defender to go alongside Romero – or if they will trust Eric Dier or Davinson Sanchez. The latter has been linked with Sevilla. The way Paratici is going about his business, it is likely another defender could come in.
