Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham and Piero Hincapie's agents have meeting scheduled
Spurs have an incredible attack and a decent midfield, but their defence – apart from Cristian Romero – is their biggest cause for concern every time they step on the pitch.
Antonio Conte wants to eliminate that issue, and Hincapie could be the one.
Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham and Piero Hincapie’s agents have a meeting scheduled
Hincapie was one of the underrated stars of the World Cup in Qatar.
The 21-year-old played all three of Ecuador’s group stage games, and although he couldn’t stop his nation from getting eliminated, his performances definitely caught the eye.
With the transfer window open now, Hincapie is an interesting option for multiple top clubs in Europe. Romano has revealed that Tottenham are one of them, and they have a meeting scheduled with people close to the player to discuss a move in the summer.
He said on House Of Champions: A Daily CBS Soccer Podcast: “Another player I would keep an eye on is Piero Hincapie, the Ecuador centre-back playing for Bayer Leverkusen.
“Left-footed, very good player also on Inter and Napoli’s list for the summer.
“He could be one of the targets for Tottenham. They’re going to have a meeting in the next days to discuss Piero Hincapie with people close to the player. But, the target is for the summer more than January.”
Hincapie’s age, ability, potential and contract situation – which does not expire until the summer of 2026 – make him one of Leverkusen’s prized assets.
He was always going to cost a lot of money, with The Sun reporting last summer that he will cost £34 million. However, after an impressive campaign for club and country, we expect that figure to go up considerably.
Tottenham really do need upgrades at the back. Eric Dier, Ben Davies and on-loan centre-half Clement Lenglet are all decent players, but if Spurs want to go to the next level, they need better defenders.
Hincapie would be a brilliant addition, but whether they’ll be able to get him in this window or in the summer remains to be seen.
