Newcastle United have parted ways with Lee Charnley after 22 years and will now step up their quest to appoint a director of football at the club.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims that with Charnley having now left, Newcastle will now look to bring in a director of football for PIF to work with.

Although Charnley’s role was completely different to that of a director of football, Romano claims that interviews have already started this week with candidates.

Despite Romano’s update here appearing to suggest a DoF will directly replace Charnley, Newcastle will likely make two new appointments.

The Independent has quoted the club as saying they will look to appoint a new CEO. This will likely be the person taking over from Charnley, with a new DoF expected to deal solely with football and playing staff.

Charnley had been with the Magpies prior to Mike Ashley taking over in 2007 and stood the test of time. However, like Ashley, he was viewed as being out of the loop and an unseen and unheard presence at St James’.

Getting Eddie Howe in was the key for Newcastle. But now with Howe in place, the club can start to reshuffle behind the scenes and it looks like that’s what they’re doing with Charnley here.

Whoever comes in next, is a bit of a mystery. Romano suggesting interviews are already underway would appear to be a hint that someone will be in place pretty soon.

But, just like Howe, getting the right person in here is vital. All the best clubs have the best people available in these roles. So with endless money and the pick of the best really, Newcastle and PIF will be desperately keen to ensure this is done properly.
