Fabrizio Romano says midfielder Spurs led race for has now gone elsewhere

A few weeks ago, Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly the frontrunners to sign Stanis Idumbo Muzambo.

However, Spurs have now lost out in the race to sign the Ajax talent, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer insider has taken to X tonight to report that Idumbo Muzambo has signed a contract with Sevilla.

Romano added that the 18-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal until 2028, while the deal with Ajax has been “done, confirmed”.

In December, Belgian outlet DH claimed that the ‘most concrete avenue’ for Idumbo Muzambo would lead to Tottenham.

The youngster’s contract in the Netherlands was set to expire at the end of the season, resulting in Spurs coming forward and offering him a ‘project of four years’.

Tottenham’s idea was apparently to sign Idumbo Muzambo and place him in the first-team for the rest of the campaign, before reassessing things in summer.

Tottenham Hotspur miss out on Stanis Idumbo Muzambo

Spurs will certainly have fancied their chances of securing his signature, considering how much pull they have now, with Ange Postecoglou having cleaned house.

Indeed, Radu Dragusin rejected Bayern Munich to come to Tottenham, and the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Destiny Udogie have thrived after opting to join Spurs.

However, it’s very much a case of ‘you win some, you lose some’. In this instance, Idumbo Muzambo has picked Sevilla. Perhaps they might’ve been able to offer starting football right away?

If that was the case, then it might’ve been the best thing for his development to go for them over Spurs, where he may have had to bide his time and potentially take in a loan first.

While it’s a little disappointing, Tottenham can be proud of their transfer business so far this month, and there’s still plenty of time for them to negotiate with – and hopefully sign – other players.
