Liverpool are still in the hunt for RB Leipzig defender, Ibrahima Konate, according to respected journalist and transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano.
The Reds were said to be close to a deal for Konate last month, when The Athletic reported that Liverpool had identified the Leipzig star as their top defensive target.
But nothing has come of that since and Konate has spoken this week to suggest that no contact has been made with the Reds. That has led to some supporters believing the deal could be hitting the buffers.
However, taking to his Twitter account early this morning, Romano issued an update to say Liverpool are still firmly in the mix, although no deal is done and Leipzig are demanding the full release clause be paid.
Liverpool are still working to reach an agreement with Ibrahima Konaté. He’s one of the ‘top targets’ in the list and #LFC will be offering a five-years contract. Not done or agreed, as of today. RB Leipzig will only sell Konaté if the full release clase will be paid. 🔴 #LFC

It seems, then, that Konate is still very much in the running to become a Liverpool player this summer, despite conflicting reports in the last week or so.
The big defender would be ideal, of course. The Reds’ defensive problems and injuries are well-document this season, so it is little surprise to see Jurgen Klopp wanting a top centre-half for his squad.
TBR View: Liverpool and Konate talk may drag on a while yet…
It’s already got the feeling of one of those transfers, where it goes on all summer with a few twists and turns inbetween.
Konate’s comments this week didn’t help matters, while Liverpool themselves are desperate for a new face. But, it could all be smoke and mirrors from the defender, and a move to the Reds would be hard to turn down.
Put simply here, Liverpool simply need to pay that release clause and get this deal sorted. And quickly.
