Fabrizio Romano has claimed Liverpool plan on holding contract talks with Virgil van Dijk in the coming weeks, with Fabinho the next on the list.
Speaking on his Here We Go Podcast, the respected journalist and transfer guru says Liverpool’s priority is to tie up both Van Dijk and Fabinho, regardless of the situation with Gini Wijnaldum.
Romano claims Liverpool have yet to hear back from Wijnaldum since December although they do want to keep the Dutchman.
But that will not stop them in their pursuit of keeping Van Dijk and Fabinho, with talks for the big Dutch defender set to start ‘in the next couple of weeks’, according to Romano.
Van Dijk only signed a new deal with the Reds in 2019 to bump his wages up and tie him until 2025. But Romano claims Liverpool want to extend that deal again to prevent any notion of him even considering a move away.
Fabinho is also said to be in the priority list for the Liverpool board and Jurgen Klopp. After Van Dijk, the Brazilian could then be offered fresh terms, with his deal running until 2023 at the moment.
TBR View: Smart moves from Liverpool, they need these two for a long time
We all knew how important Van Dijk was but the form of Fabinho has proven just how important he is to the cause.
Liverpool want to be on top of things here. The Wijnaldum situation has lingered over them for too long this season and they want to avoid any sort of repeat in the future.
Further, tying down two top players only highlights the club’s ambitions and will help attract new talent to the club, too.
