Fabrizio Romano offers Newcastle United manager update
The race to become the next Newcastle manager seems to be edging closer to a conclusion, and respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has offered an update on the situation at St James’ Park.
A number of names have been mentioned in recent weeks as being on the radar of new Newcastle owners, PIF. However, with Steve Bruce having only just left this week, the hunt for that new coach has hotted up in the last few days.
And the name being mentioned almost hourly now is former Roma manager, Paulo Fonseca. The Portuguese coach was close to becoming Tottenham manager in the summer, only for the deal to collapse late in the day.
But for now, he seems to be heading to Newcastle. Indeed, respected journalist, Fabrizio Romano, has offered two updates and suggested as much. Interestingly, Romano claims that Antonio Conte was never even in the running to be the boss.
Instead, Fonseca seems to be the man for the job. And taking to Twitter again later down the line, Romano confirmed more talks will take place today with Fonseca.
Certainly, it seems the Magpies could have someone new in charge in no time at all.
TBR’s View: Fonseca a risky but decent appointment as Newcastle manager
There’s an element of risk here with Fonseca given he hasn’t proven anything in England yet. But beyond that, he is a top coach who has a lot of potential.
He’s won the league three times with Shakhtar. That in itself is impressive enough. And at this moment, Newcastle need a coach who knows what it is to win games.
The news about Conte is a blow. But in reality, he was always going to be tough to land. The Italian seems to want ready-made teams for winning, which Newcastle simply aren’t at the moment.
