Arsenal have been linked with a number of midfield targets this summer with Mikel Merino said to be one of the Gunners’ top targets.

Arsenal are incredibly keen on Mikel Merino, but before they turned their focus towards Merino, they were in for Joao Neves.

The Benfica midfielder was someone Arsenal seriously considered signing this summer, but, unfortunately, the ‘excellent’ player will be joining another club instead.

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on Playback, Neves will instead be joining PSG this summer.

Joao Neves is joining PSG

Romano shared what he knows about the young star.

“The first thing I want to say is that PSG are closing in on a deal to sign Joao Neves. Joao Neves will be a PSG player, I can say that. It’s just a matter of time and days. It’s almost imminent between PSG and Benfica. PSG are convinced that by next week Joao Neves will join them.” Romano said.

Arsenal need big midfield addition

Arsenal look like they will be getting a new midfielder this summer.

Mikel Merino is the man the Gunners are said to be most keen on, but even if Merino does sign, a box office midfield addition may still be needed in the near future.

Indeed, at the age of 28, Merino may not be the most long-term of solutions, and Arsenal will have to keep their eyes peeled for any midfield market opportunities over the next few years.

Neves may well be the best young midfield player on the market at the moment, and while Arsenal have missed out here, they may eventually need to make a splash and sign a player of Neves’ profile if they want to go on to become bona fide Champions League contenders.
