The January transfer window is right around the corner and it’s no secret at this point that Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier is Newcastle United’s number one target.

The Englishman joined Atletico Madrid back in 2019 and he has been brilliant for them. He has played 85 times for Atleti in all competitions and even helped them win the league title last season ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Trippier now has 18 months left on his contract and everyone expects him to leave in next month’s transfer window. Both Manchester United and Tottenham have been linked, but it looks like Newcastle will be the ones who’ll get him.

Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on the situation.

Romano: Atletico Madrid are waiting for Newcastle to bid for Trippier

On December 15, Romano first revealed in a tweet that Newcastle are interested in signing Trippier in January. The journalist even claimed that Manchester United had a bid rejected for the Englishman in the summer, which shows that the defender is a wanted man.

This morning, Romano quote-retweeted his news from earlier this month and confirmed that Trippier is Newcastle’s main target. He even claimed that Atletico Madrid are waiting for a bid from the Magpies to close the deal.

“Atletico Madrid are waiting for Newcastle official proposal for Kieran Trippier. He’s the main target as right back as reported days ago, and he’s out of contract in 2023 with Atléti – there are also other names in the list,” Romano said on Twitter.

TBR View:

Newcastle currently have Emil Krafth and Javier Manquillo at right-back while Jacob Murphy can also slot in there. However, a player of Trippier’s quality and experience is definitely an upgrade.

The 31-year-old, labelled as ‘outstanding‘ by Gareth Southgate, has played over 450 senior games for club and country and he knows the Premier League very well. Under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, his defending has improved massively as well, and he would be a brilliant addition to a number of sides in the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see how much Atleti will demand for Trippier. If Romano’s words are anything to go by, they’re ready to sell him, but if it’s for an outrageous amount, it’s probably not worth it considering that he’s 31 already.
