Arsenal appear to be closing in on their second major signing of the summer transfer window after bringing Riccardo Calafiori in from Bologna.
The Gunners have already signed a new defensive option in the shape of Calafiori, and now, a new midfielder could be inbound.
Indeed, a move for Mikel Merino is said to be edging ever closer to completion, and according to Fabrizio Romano, a few more pieces of this puzzle are now falling into place.
Speaking on Playback, Romano has stated that Carlos Soler is getting closer and closer to joining Real Sociedad as Merino’s replacement.
Romano says that Soler’s move to San Sebastian could unlock Merino’s move to Arsenal, a move that the journalist describes as ‘important’.

Carlos Soler to Real Sociedad will allow Arsenal to make Merino move
Romano shared what he knows about both Soler and Merino.
“We had many rumours about Real Sociedad about the names. Tonight we have to say that Carlos Soler is getting closer to becoming the replacement for Mikel Merino at Real Sociedad,” Romano said.
“Real Sociedad have started negotiations on player’s side. Soler wants to leave PSG it is already clear, they have also started negotiations with PSG. We can break the story that Carlos Soler is expected to be the replacement for Mikel Merino at Real Sociedad.”
“So Merino after Calafiori could be the second signing for Arsenal and it would be an important move for Mikel Arteta.”
Arsenal’s squad is almost complete
Mikel Merino will give Arsenal a lot more depth in the midfield, and the Gunners’ squad will be almost complete.
Arsenal will have solid options in every position, but they may still need one more player.
Indeed, the Gunners don’t quite have the necessary depth down the right wing with Bukayo Saka currently the only real option for the north London club in that spot.
Once Merino signs, Arsenal may go after a new attacking player who can play down the right, but beyond that, it’s hard to pinpoint any other position in which Arsenal need to strengthen.
