Liverpool were linked with Elif Elmas during the summer as they looked to overhaul their midfield.

The Reds apparently made an approach to sign the Napoli ace before they concluded a late deal for Ryan Gravenberch.

That was according to Corriere dello Sport, who claimed that both Liverpool and RB Leipzig were interested in Elmas.

While Napoli held firm in summer, they’ve now decided to sell him, and the Bundesliga club will be the beneficiary.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the reigning Serie A champions have agreed a £20million deal to sell the 24-year-old to Leipzig.

The transfer is very advanced, with Romano tweeting that Elmas is in Germany to undergo medical tests before signing a long-term contract.

Elmas has made a name for himself in recent years, making 47 appearances in all competitions last term and helping Napoli win their first Scudetto since 1990.

The midfield ‘diamond’ has come in for a lot of plaudits in recent years and would’ve no doubt been a good addition for Liverpool.

At the same time, the Reds are well stocked in midfield at present.

Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliot and Stefan Bajcetic are the present and future at Anfield.

In addition, Klopp also has Wataru Endo and Thiago Alcantara at Anfield as experienced heads.

With such a well-stocked midfield, there may not be much room for Elmas to get regular game time, even if, at £20million, he’s certainly a bargain.
