Fabrizio Romano reveals what Manchester United did immediately after Newcastle’s new Benjamin Sesko bid

Manchester United and Newcastle both remain keen on signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer.

The Slovenia international striker has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League for over a year now, with Arsenal viewed as the favourites for Sesko’s signature for quite some time.

However, the Gunners abandoned their interest in the Leipzig star and decided to sign Viktor Gyokeres instead, and that has opened the door for other clubs to land Sesko.

Newcastle United are pushing to sign the striker, but Manchester United have not walked away.

How Manchester United reacted after Newcastle’s new Benjamin Sesko bid

Newcastle United had an opening bid for Benjamin Sesko rejected by RB Leipzig last week.

The Magpies first tabled an offer worth €75 million plus €5 million in add-ons (£65.3m + £4.3m), but that was turned down by the Bundesliga side.

On Monday, the Toon returned with an €80 million offer plus an additional €10 million in add-ons (£70m + £8.7m) for Sesko and are keen to reach an agreement with Leipzig.

A response from Germany is awaited at the time of writing, but Manchester United did not sit quietly after seeing Newcastle improve their original bid.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Red Devils immediately called Leipzig and informed them that they will bid too, but only if Sesko agrees to join them.

The journalist said in a video on his YouTube channel: “Manchester United reacted to this official bid from Newcastle by telling Red Bull Leipzig again in verbal contact: ‘We are aware of this bid from Newcastle, but we will also bid for Benjamin Sesko if he decides to come to us.’

“So, different strategies. Newcastle are going very strong, (they’ve) put the money on the table with an important proposal to the club, an important proposal to the player. Manchester United are still not presenting an official bid, but telling Leipzig and obviously also the player that they are ready to bid as soon as the player will decide.

“Different approaches, different strategies, but always with one guarantee – when the player will make his decision, this story becomes clear.

“So, it’s on the player or it’s eventually on one of the two clubs to say ‘okay, we leave the race’, but as of tonight, Monday night, Newcastle are presenting important money on the table and Manchester United are telling Leipzig: ‘Don’t worry, we will bid too’.

Newcastle will be scared of one thing in the Benjamin Sesko race

Newcastle United have had a very difficult summer transfer window.

The Magpies have had an interest in Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike to strengthen their attack, but all of those players picked different clubs.

To make things worse, their best player, Alexander Isak, is keen to leave Newcastle, with Liverpool waiting on the wings to sign him.

That is why the Toon are going big on Sesko, but we’re sure there will be fears inside St James’ Park that the Leipzig star could snub them too, just like Ekitike and Pedro did.

That would be heartbreaking for Magpies fans, but with Manchester United still in the mix, it remains a very real possibility.
