Fabrizio Romano names Newcastle's 'big' transfer target in 2023

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Leicester City’s James Maddison remains Newcastle United‘s biggest transfer target.

The Englishman has been linked with a move to St James’ Park for a few months now. Eddie Howe and co tried extremely hard to sign him last summer, but no deal materialised.

However, 2023 seems like the year Newcastle will make a big move to sign Maddison.

Fabrizio Romano says James Maddison is still Newcastle’s ‘big target’

Back in the summer transfer window, Newcastle tabled two bids to sign Maddison from Leicester City.

The second bid, according to Sky Sports, was just over £40 million, but the Foxes made it clear they will not accept anything less than £60 million. That put a stop to Newcastle’s hopes, but they haven’t given up.

Maddison will enter the final year of his contract this summer. Newcastle plan on making their move then and Romano revealed that they are still in contact with Maddison and co about a deal.

The journalist said on House Of Champions: A CBS Soccer Podcast: “On Newcastle’s side, I’m told their big target – it’s not going to be an easy one in January but for the summer – is James Maddison.

“(He’s) A player they wanted really last summer, they are still tracking him, they are still keeping contacts.

“Maddison is always a kind of obsession for Newcastle.”

Like he did last season, Maddison has had a really good campaign this time as well.

The 26-year-old has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 13 Premier League appearances so far this season. He managed 18 and 12 last term, which is a sensational return for an attacking midfielder.

Newcastle are absolutely right to target a player like Maddison. He would be fantastic for them, but signing him at the end of this season will not be easy.

Maddison will have less than 12 months left in his contract in July, and we’re sure plenty of other clubs will have him on their shortlist then.
