Fabrizio Romano gives update on Tottenham striker Harry Kane’s future

Fabrizio Romano has told CBS Soccer’s Que Golazo podcast that he expects Harry Kane to stay at Tottenham Hotspur next summer having spoken to those close to the club – but reckons an offer of £135million could change that.

Kane, 27, has been in fine form for Tottenham this season despite Jose Mourinho reverting to a counter-attacking style that sees Spurs allow their opponents to dominate the ball. Kane has 16 goals and 13 assists in 23 league and cup fixtures.

The England skipper has himself dropped deeper into a number 10 role, picking passes to find the likes of Son Heung-min rushing forward. Kane has himself spoken over his future, stating that he wants to see Spurs going in the right direction.

Certainly, their title prospects and chances of returning to the top four have improved under Mourinho this season – and Romano says Kane will stay at Spurs next season, unless offers of €150million (£135million) are tabled for the striker.

“What I want to say to Tottenham fans is that Harry Kane is ready to stay at Tottenham next summer,” Romano said. “Talking with people around Tottenham, they say something is changing. They are close to the Champions League.

“Daniel Levy is happy with the squad. If some clubs arrive with offers of of €150million, then that could change. But no one can spend this money at the moment. Tottenham are totally convinced that he will stay. Kane is staying next summer.”

TBR’s view – What happens if Spurs fail to finish in the top four?

Then Spurs have a real problem. Kane told Jamie Redknapp in that Instagram video during lockdown that he needs to see Spurs going in the right direction and at least challenging for silverware. Right now, they look good value for that.

Sitting in fifth after failing to win a Premier League match in four just shows that they are still right in the mix. Semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and knockout stages of the Europa League is proof that Mourinho is balancing things well.

But the top four is a must. Failure to regain Champions League football will surely see Kane reconsider his future at Spurs.
