With every passing hour, Arsenal supporters are surely growing closer to seeing Riccardo Calafiori announced as the side’s second summer signing.
Goalkeeper David Raya was the first, penning a permanent deal having spent last season on loan from Brentford.
And whilst Arsenal fans will have been pleased to see the Spaniard join long-term, there’s a lot more excitement around a fresh face like Calafiori arriving.
The Italian can solve a variety of positions for Mikel Arteta in defence, able to play as a left centre-back or as a full-back.
And Calafiori’s exceptional quality on the ball will ultimately mean that Arteta has complete freedom with the defender, a similar situation to which the Spaniard is now enjoying with Jurrien Timber.

Both will regularly start games for Arsenal this season – essentially feeling like two new signings.
That being said, Fabrizio Romano has just shared a further update on X detailing the contract Calafiori will sign and where he will undergo the first part of his medical.
Fabrizio Romano says Riccardo Calafiori will sign five-year deal at Arsenal
Romano shared the coveted ‘here we go’ on Wednesday and has since continued to keep Arsenal fans updated.
Unfortunately, the journalist is yet to provide too much detail on the three further signings Arsenal expect to make after Calafiori arrives, but he has been hot on the news about the Italian defender.
He shared: “Arsenal have just scheduled new plan for Riccardo Calafiori.
“Understand first part of medical will take place in London with player due to travel soon.
“Final check in the US and then Calafiori will sign five year deal as new #AFC player.
“Here we go, confirmed.”
A significant win for Arsenal this summer, given Calafiori was of interest to several clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus.
It’s no easy feat to beat Juve to a top Italian talent, a real coup for Edu and his team.
And in order to land Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino, Edu may have to do something similar in competition with Barcelona.
Arsenal have been in contact to sign Merino, and could accelerate their efforts once a deal for Calafiori is completely sealed.
