Fabrizio Romano delivers some exciting news for Tottenham fans

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has told his Here We Go podcast that Tottenham Hotspur are “really close” to extending Son Heung-min’s current contract – with the player said to be extremely happy in North London.

Son, 28, has been in dazzling form for Tottenham this season – scoring 13 goals and creating six more in his 17 league and cup appearances. On Sunday, he opened the scoring and laid on assist for Harry Kane’s effort against Arsenal.

The South Korea captain is currently contracted to Spurs until the summer of 2023 – believed to be raking in £140,000 a week (Spotrac). But that is now set to increase with Tottenham in talks over a new deal.

Romano told his podcast that Spurs are nearing a deal to extend his contract by two or even three years – with all parties involved in the new contract said to want to get it over the line. It will see Son commit his long-term future.

“There are good feelings to seeing Son extend his contract with Tottenham,” Romano said. “It’s really close to an agreement. It’s not done yet, so we have to wait before saying ‘here we go!’

“But the agreement is getting closer, probably a five or six-year deal. Everybody in this deal wants to sign the new contract. Son is so happy with Tottenham. The new contract is coming in some weeks.”

TBR’s view – Massive boost for Spurs, and long-term sigh of relief

Not that any clubs have become interested, but allowing Son’s contract to edge closer to the two-year mark would have seen doubts over his future creep in. Getting it tied up, with three years still left to run, is good work by Spurs.

Tying the knot while Son is happy – given his form and Tottenham’s position in the table – is clever business by Spurs. It completely removes the chance of other clubs becoming interested. A boost for Harry Kane, too?
